Gary used teh F. Y. Batchelor as his model for this painting, "Silent Wheel." In the late 1870's the F. Y. Batchelor set the upstream record from Bismarck to Fort Buford, North Dakota, a distance of 307 miles in 55 hours and 25 minutes. the Batchelor was sunk and raised then converted into a stripped down freight carrier in the late 1880's.
